Finding exhibitions

What you can do

On the Bijusanpo home screen, the list shows only the exhibitions that are open on the date you pick. You can quickly find exhibitions you can visit that day, matched to the date, place, and your preferences.

Changing the date

Use the date selector at the top of the screen to switch instantly between “Today,” “Tomorrow,” and “Weekend.” You can also tap the calendar icon to pick a different day.

Exhibitions that are closed on the day you pick are hidden automatically, so the list always works as a ready-made “exhibitions you can visit on this day” list.

Finding exhibitions you can visit right now (great for nights and after work)

When you’re thinking “Can I drop in somewhere on my way home from work?”, set the date to “Today” and tap the clock icon labeled “Open now,” which appears just to the right of the date. Only the exhibitions you can still make it into right now will be shown. If you’ve allowed location access, they’re sorted nearest first, so you can quickly find exhibitions you can reach right from where you are.

Friday and Saturday night openings (night museums) and exhibitions that stay open late also show up as long as it’s before last admission, so use this for an evening art walk.

  • This works only when “Today” is selected
  • For exhibitions with no registered last-admission time, we use 30 minutes before closing as a guide

How sorting works

The sort order changes automatically depending on whether location is available.

  • When location is allowed: nearest to your current location first
  • When location is not allowed: exhibitions ending soonest first

You can check which order is active from the badge in the top-right of the screen (“Nearest” / “Ending soonest”). When location is needed, tap “Search from current location” to bring up the permission dialog.

If your location can’t be obtained, see When your location can’t be obtained.

Switching status with tabs

Use the tabs above the list to switch which exhibition statuses are shown.

  • Now on: exhibitions actually open on the date you picked
  • Ending soon: exhibitions that are on show but nearing the end of their run
  • Upcoming: exhibitions that haven’t started yet and are coming up

Each tab also shows a count, so a growing “Ending soon” number is a sign to plan your schedule early.

Narrowing things down with Filters

Tap “Filters” to narrow the view by area and exhibition type.

  • Area: regions that are easy for you to reach (multiple selections allowed)
  • Include closed days: closed exhibitions are normally hidden for that day, but you can show them if needed
  • Include collection exhibitions: whether to include collection (permanent) exhibitions in the list
  • Include paid exhibitions: whether to include exhibitions with an admission fee in the list

Your filter settings carry over to your next visit. Use the “Reset filters” button to clear them all at once.

Searching by keyword

Type part of an exhibition name or venue name into the search box, and suggestions will be completed for you.

Tapping a tag on an exhibition detail page (for example “日本画” or “現代美術”) returns you to a list filtered by that tag. A tag badge appears at the top of the screen, and you can clear it with the ”×” on the badge.

Common stumbling points

  • When “Now on” shows 0 results: try switching to another day, resetting your filters, or checking the “Upcoming” and “Ending soon” tabs as well
  • “Search from current location” doesn’t appear / doesn’t respond: your browser’s location settings may be the cause → When your location can’t be obtained
  • An exhibition isn’t listed: you can send a listing request from My Page → When an exhibition you want isn’t listed
